Commentary from Tim Sale: Black and White:
"Superman is a generous soul who believes in the power of goodness. He believes in the American Dream, in the way that Norman Rockwell painted it. For Superman, family and community is deeply important, and inclusive.
"Superman is also an alien, that's how he gets his power, he's not cut; he doesn't need to go to the gym. He's a corn-fed farm boy. I wanted to convey that in his size, his bulk. In addition, I wanted that boyish innocence in his face, an openness, and that took me a while to get without making Clark look retarded."

Superman: Kryptonite
Six issue mini-series, 2007-2008
with Darwyn Cooke, Dave Stewart and Comicraft
"The main theme of Superman: Kryptonite was Superman learning about vulnerability, and one of the ways that he had to learn it, and ultimately the most personal way, was through his relationship with Lois. In the first issue, there is a scene where they are having a picnic date on the Eiffel Tower at night, and it's fun and romantic in a way that only Superman could provide. But also important, not in a way that Clark could ever provide, and the arc that Clark takes during the story to come to terms with that being okay is the core of the story.

Superman For All Seasons
Four issue mini-series, 1998
with Jeph Loeb, Bjarne Hansen and Comicraft
"One of the things that was important to me when we were doing Superman For All Seasons was to tap into Norman Rockwell's vision of America, but then to acknowledge that it's not real -- that it's a vision of America as America would like itself to be. Rockwell's version is romantic, idealistic, it's a created reality.
"Superman believes in that ideal. He doesn't believe it's the reality, but he believes the ideal; he's romantic to that extent."
